Building More Than Soccer Players: CBFC Leads the Charge on a Community Service Day

Soccer teaches far more than passing, shooting, and teamwork. At Charity Ball Football Club (CBFC), it also teaches responsibility, leadership, and the importance of serving others.

As part of Mozambique’s Independence Day celebrations on June 25, CBFC kids traded their jerseys for gloves and led a community-wide clean-up campaign. The clean up took place at the Nhangau Market and the surrounding public spaces where many of the city’s most important civic celebrations are held. Their efforts were about more than collecting trash; they were about taking pride in the community they call home.

The initiative reflects one of CBFC’s three core pillars: Health. Alongside promoting access to clean drinking water and teaching healthy hygiene habits, CBFC emphasizes creating safe, clean environments where children and families can thrive. A clean community helps reduce disease, creates safer public spaces, and reinforces the idea that everyone has a role to play in caring for their surroundings.

In Mozambique, where many communities face ongoing public health and infrastructure challenges, these lessons have lasting impact. Young people who understand the connection between clean environments and healthy lives become leaders who can inspire their families, neighbors, and future generations. Service projects like this turn soccer into a classroom where character is developed alongside athletic ability.

According to CBFC Director Michael Muchene, the response from the community was overwhelmingly positive. Local residents were encouraged to see young people taking ownership of their neighborhood, while vendors—particularly the women who operate small businesses in the Nhangau Market, expressed their gratitude and pride. For the children, participating in the campaign gave them a sense of purpose beyond the soccer field, showing that even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference.

At CBFC, developing great players is only part of the mission. The greater goal is to raise young people who understand that leadership means serving others, taking responsibility for their community, and leaving every place better than they found it.
