No Pulisic, no problem. The USMNT beat Australia 2-0 in Seattle to reach the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 — back-to-back World Cup wins for the first time for #USMNT since 1930. Here’s the recap, the wild stats, and the moments that lit up the internet.

The biggest question heading into Friday was a calf. The biggest answer was a statement.
Without injured captain Christian Pulisic, the U.S. men’s national team rolled into Seattle and took care of business against Australia, winning 2-0 at a roaring Lumen Field to punch its ticket to the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 — with a full group game still to spare. Two games in, two wins, zero doubt.
What happened
The U.S. didn’t wait long to get going. In the 11th minute, Folarin Balogun burst down the left wing and whipped in a low cross that Australian defender Cameron Burgess turned into his own net. (If you’re keeping score at home: that’s the second straight match a U.S. opponent has scored an own goal — Paraguay did the same a week ago.)
The dagger came right before halftime. Off a deflected Sergiño Dest free kick, 21-year-old defender Alex Freeman climbed over everyone and powered home a header in the 43rd minute. The flag went up for offside, the crowd held its breath, yet VAR confirmed Freeman was onside all along. 2-0, and Australia never recovered.
It got chippy after that (seven yellow cards were issued) but the U.S. defense slammed the door and walked off with a clean sheet.
Why it actually matters
This wasn’t just a win. It was a piece of history:
- It’s the first time since 1930 that the American men have won back-to-back World Cup matches.
- The U.S. became just the second team after Mexico to lock up a knockout spot — and did it with a game to spare for the first time ever.
- The Round of 32 awaits on July 1 in Santa Clara, against a still-to-be-determined third-place finisher.
The breakout: Alex Freeman
Remember the name. At 21, Freeman is the youngest player on the U.S. roster, and Friday was his coming-out party. Beyond the leaping, Superman-style header for his third international goal, he locked down the back line with a stack of clearances and tackles against a physical Australian side. Not a bad day at the office.
Meanwhile, Pulisic watched from the bench with his calf in a sleeve. Coach Mauricio Pochettino called it “impossible” for him to play but signaled his star is improving and could be back for the knockouts.
The Best Moments From The Internet
“Country Roads” took them home
When the final whistle blew, the players didn’t head straight for the tunnel. They stayed to belt out “Take Me Home, Country Roads” with the whole stadium. Tens of thousands of voices, one John Denver chorus, total goosebumps. If you needed proof that American soccer has arrived, this is it.

Seattle went nuts, and FOX caught every decibel
Lumen Field was bouncing hours before kickoff, and the FOX cameras drank it all in. Turn your sound on for this one: a wall of red, white and blue at full volume. Even the broadcast crew (Rob Stone, Carli Lloyd, Clint Dempsey, and Alexi Lalas) could only sit back and admit they’d never seen anything like this in American soccer. They’re not wrong.

Wait… is that Russell Crowe on the touchline?
Somewhere between the steely game face and the sideline pacing, the internet reached a unanimous verdict: Mauricio Pochettino has morphed into Gladiator-era Russell Crowe. The best part? The timeline decided he’s now out-Russell-Crowe-ing Russell Crowe himself. Are you not entertained?
